Fairmile Probus Club Walk – Tuesday 28 February 2023
Pewley Down and Chantry Woods
Meet at 10.45 to order lunch for a 11.00 start at :
The Sea Horse Inn, 52-54 The Street, Shalford, Guildford GU4 8BU
Members will remember that I led a walk in October 2022 starting at The Sea Horse Inn in Shalford and I make no apology for The Sea Horse being the location for meeting and for lunch again this month as the Inn did us proud last time! Those of you who joined us last time may recollect that this is a spacious Mitchell and Butler Inn which offers a small lunch menu including Gammon Steak & Fried Eggs, Posh Fish Fingers, Fillet Steak Sandwiches and a Sweet Potato Massaman (vegetarian) Curry, all at £12.95 (menu attached), complementing a comprehensive a la carte menu.
Parking
There is plenty of parking space. Please use the ‘Additional’ Car Parking area behind the Inn and enter the Inn through the backdoor, access from the rear garden.
The Walk
This walk goes in the opposite direction from the previous walk and is virtually a circular walk of approx. 3 miles starting out from the Sea Horse car park. From the car park, we cross the main Guildford/Shalford Road, cross a field and walk up a gentle gradient on hedge-enclosed paths to Chantry Cottage and then walk up the road (Pilgrim’s Way) for about a quarter of a mile to reach Pewley Down. The road is steep. We will take it very gently and there is a very short steep grass path to the top of the Pewley Down where there is a seat (!), a ‘trig’ point and a view!
Most of the rest of the walk is on the flat, initially along the top of Pewley Down.includes one or two short stretches with gentle gradients or down-hill.
From Pewley Down we walk along hedge-enclosed paths to Chantry Woods where we will have a choice of route back to Shalford. If the weather is good, hopefully with the sun shining, we will take a route which initially skirts the south side of Chantry woods with glorious views and ends up going through part of the woods, back to Chantry Cottage and Shalford. If the weather is poor, we will take a short-cut through Chantry Woods, walking the North Downs Way back to Chantry Cottage.
If there has been a lot of rain and you are advised to wear stout walking shoes/boots although the paths are well used and do not tend to be muddy or flooded.
